Unlike wet rot, which remains localised to moisture sources, dry rot can advance significantly by transporting moisture across surfaces. This ability allows it to thrive in timber far removed from the original source of dampness.

How to Identify Dry Rot

Early detection is crucial in preventing costly repairs. Signs of dry rot include:

✔ Shrunken, cracked, or darkened timber with a brittle texture.
✔ Distinctive musty, damp odour indicating fungal activity.
✔ Cotton wool-like fungal growth that spreads across surfaces.
✔ Rust-coloured fruiting bodies (sporophores) releasing spores into the air.

How Does Dry Rot Spread?

Dry rot spores are present in the air and only develop when conditions are favourable. The fungus requires:

  • Moisture – Often from leaks, condensation, or poor ventilation.
  • Timber – It primarily affects untreated wood with a moisture content of 20% or more.
  • Lack of ventilation – Enclosed spaces, such as underfloor voids, roof spaces, and wall cavities, provide ideal conditions.

Once established, dry rot produces hyphae (fine fungal strands) that spread into affected timber, breaking it down and weakening its structure. Over time, it forms thick mycelial growth, which can extend over masonry and other materials in search of new timber to consume.
