Types of Waterproofing Systems

There are three primary approaches to waterproofing design, each suited to different site conditions and construction methods:

Type A – Barrier Protection (Tanked System)

• Relies on membranes, coatings, or renders to prevent water penetration.
• Used in basements, podium decks, and retaining walls.
• Common materials include liquid-applied membranes, bituminous coatings, and cementitious waterproofing.

Type B – Structural Waterproofing (Integral Protection)

• Incorporates waterproof concrete or additives to resist water ingress.
• Provides a durable, built-in solution for basements and substructures.
• Requires careful design and quality control to prevent weak points.

Type C – Cavity Drain Systems (Water Management Approach)

• Uses an internal drainage system to collect and redirect water safely.
• Ideal for habitable basements and retrofitting older buildings.

Includes drainage membranes, sumps, and pumps for controlled discharge.
